Universal "Babelfish"

When we search for extra-terrestrial intelligence, what are we looking for? What does it mean to say that we are "intelligent?"

"Universal Babelfish could translate Alien Tounges"

In this article the main focus is if we ever do encounter aliens, how would we speak to them? Terrance Deacon from UC Berkeley argues that all languages arise from the common goal we have to describe the physical world. Since the physical world is limited therfore the language used to describe it must be limited as well. Theories suggest aliens may use scents to convey topics. Deacon also mentions that we as humans can simply point at something to refer to a physical object, communication without words. Since no aliens are readily available to test these theories and potential "alien decoding software." Denise Herzing of Florida Atlantic University suggests we may be able to attempt to understand and decode the language of dolphins as a first step to understanding how universal language and communication really is. It will be incredibly interesting to follow the development of this research.
